How to Litter-Train a Kitten
Most kittens pick up litter box habits from their mother, so training usually goes fast — as long as you set up the space right from day one.
Step by step
- One litter box, one small room. In the first few days, keep the kitten in a single room with its litter box, bowl, and bed — that way there's less room to "miss."
- Put the litter box somewhere quiet and easy to reach — away from the food bowls, but close enough that the kitten can get there any time.
- Take the kitten to the box after naps and meals. Those are the moments the urge hits most often.
- Don't scrub the box too often with strong-smelling disinfectants in the first few weeks — a bit of its own familiar scent helps the kitten find it again.
- If there's an "accident," just clean it up without scolding, using a neutral, chlorine-free cleaner (the smell of chlorine is similar to urine and can actually encourage repeat marking).
If it doesn't click right away
Try switching litter — not every kitten likes the texture. Also make sure the box is large enough with low sides so it's easy to climb into. Training usually takes anywhere from a few days to a week.
